How To Attach a Virtual Hard Disk in Windows 10

Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs) provide flexibility for testing, backups, and managing multiple environments. Attaching one in Windows 10 is quick and can be done through Disk Management.

Steps to Attach a Virtual Hard Disk

  1. Press Windows Key + X and select Disk Management.
  2. Click Action in the menu bar.
  3. Select Attach VHD.
  4. Browse to the location of your .vhd or .vhdx file.
  5. Click OK.

Initialize and Format (if needed)

If the disk is new, you may need to initialize and format it:

  • Right-click the new disk and select Initialize Disk.
  • Choose GPT or MBR as the partition style.
  • Right-click the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume.
