Installing Windows directly onto another HDD or SSD without using a USB drive is simpler than many expect. This guide walks you through the process step by step, ensuring a clean installation with minimal hassle.
Requirements
- A working Windows PC (secondary computer).
- The target HDD/SSD connected directly via SATA or NVMe.
- A Windows ISO (Windows 10 or 11, downloaded from Microsoft).
- WinToHDD software (the free version works fine for Home editions).
Install & Launch WinToHDD
- Download WinToHDD from the official EasyUEFI site.
- Install it and open the program.
- On the main interface, choose New Installation.
Select the ISO
- Browse to your Windows ISO file.
- WinToHDD will scan it and display available editions (Home, Pro, etc.).
- Select the edition you want to install.
Choose the Target Drive
- Select the HDD/SSD where Windows should be installed.
- Double‑check the drive size and name to avoid wiping the wrong disk.
- Choose the partition style:
- MBR for legacy BIOS systems.
- GPT for modern UEFI systems.
Installation Process
- Check options to bypass internet connection requirements and disable automatic device encryption if needed.
- Click Next and let WinToHDD apply the image.
- The process duration depends on drive speed.
- Once complete, the drive will have a fresh Windows installation ready.
Boot from the New Drive
- If using the same PC: enter BIOS/UEFI and set the new drive as the first boot device.
- If sending the drive to a client: they simply connect it to their PC.
- On first boot, Windows will continue with the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), region, keyboard, and account setup, just like a brand‑new system.
This method eliminates the need for a USB installer and provides a direct, efficient way to prepare a Windows-ready drive. With careful attention to drive selection and partition style, you can ensure a smooth installation every time.
