How To Install Windows on an HDD/SSD (No USB Drive Required)

Installing Windows without a USB drive is possible by creating a virtual boot partition with EasyBCD. This method transforms part of your hard drive into a bootable installer, making the process efficient and reliable.

Tools You Need

  • A Windows ISO (Windows 10 or 11, downloaded from Microsoft).
  • EasyBCD (boot configuration tool, free for home use).
  • At least 10 GB of free space to create a new partition.

Create a Virtual Boot Partition

  • Open Disk Management (Windows Key + X → Disk Management).
  • Shrink your main drive (C:) by about 10 GB (10240 MB). In some cases, you can shrink 9 GB (9216 MB) and extend later during setup.
  • Create a new simple volume using the unallocated space.

Copy Windows Setup Files

  • Mount the Windows ISO (right‑click → Mount).
  • Copy all files from the mounted ISO into the new 10 GB partition.
  • This partition now contains the full Windows installer.

Configure Boot with EasyBCD

  • Install and open EasyBCD.
  • Go to Add New Entry, then the WinPE tab.
  • Select WIM Image (RAM Disk) as the type.
  • Browse to the new partition → sources folder → select boot.wim.
  • Name the entry (e.g., Windows Installer) and click Add.
  • In Edit Boot Menu, confirm both entries appear:
    • Your current Windows installation.
    • The new Windows Installer option.
  • Save settings.

Boot into Installer

  • Restart your PC.
  • At boot, choose the Windows Installer entry.
  • The system will boot into Windows Setup, just like a USB installer.
  • Follow the normal installation steps:
    • Delete old system partitions (do not delete the installer partition).
    • Select the remaining unallocated space for installation.
  • Windows will install, reboot several times, and guide you through the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE).

Finalize

  • Once complete, you’ll have a fresh Windows installation.
  • You can keep the installer partition for future reinstalls or delete it later via Disk Management.
  • If deleted, adjust partitions as needed (recreate recovery partition, extend C:, etc.).

This approach eliminates the need for external media and leverages EasyBCD to create a reliable installer partition. With careful setup, you can streamline Windows installation and even reuse the partition for future upgrades.
