Tamper Protection prevents unauthorized changes to Microsoft Defender Antivirus settings — especially from malware or scripts trying to disable real-time protection, cloud protection, or security intelligence updates. Managing this feature ensures your system remains secure while giving you control when adjustments are necessary.
For Individual Devices (Home or Pro Editions)
You can manage Tamper Protection directly through the Windows Security app.
Steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Go to Virus & threat protection.
- Click Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
- Scroll to Tamper Protection and toggle it On or Off.
- Confirm with Yes if prompted by User Account Control.
Note: You must be signed in as an administrator. If the toggle is grayed out, your device may be managed by an organization.
Note: Tamper Protection may block registry changes unless it is already disabled via the Windows Security app.
Managing Tamper Protection in Windows helps safeguard your antivirus settings against unauthorized changes. Use this feature to maintain strong protection, and only disable it when you have a specific need and understand the risks involved.
