How To Share a Folder Over the Network in Windows

Sharing a folder in Windows allows other computers on your local Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection to access, view, or edit files stored on your PC. This guide covers the process for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 in a structured, secure way.

Set Your Network to Private

  • Windows disables sharing on Public networks for security. Ensure your home or office network is set to Private.
  • Open Settings (Windows Key + I).
  • Go to Network & internet.
  • Click on Wi-Fi or Ethernet depending on your connection.
  • Under Network profile type, select Private.

Enable Network Discovery and Sharing

  • In Settings, go to Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Advanced sharing settings.
  • Under Private networks:
    • Toggle Network discovery to On.
    • Toggle File and printer sharing to On.
  • Under Public networks, keep these Off for security.
  • Under All networks:
    • Password protected sharing: On requires accounts and passwords; Off is easier but less secure.
    • Public folder sharing: On makes anything in C:\Users\Public visible to others.
  • If password-protected sharing is On, you can create a specific user (e.g., ShareUser) via Settings → Accounts → Other users → Add account.

Share a Specific Folder

  • Right-click the folder → Properties → Sharing tab → Share.
  • Choose users:
    • Select Everyone to allow all users, or specify a particular user.
    • Adjust Permission Level (Read or Read/Write).
  • Click Share → Done.

Advanced Sharing (Permissions Check)

  • In Properties → Sharing tab → Advanced Sharing.
  • Check Share this folder → Permissions.
  • Select Everyone or a specific user and set permissions (Full Control, Change, Read).
  • If password-protected sharing is On, remove Everyone and keep only the specific user.
  • In the Security tab, ensure the chosen user has necessary permissions.
  • Click OK to apply.

Quick Verification

  • Press Windows Key + R → type fsmgmt.msc → Enter.
  • Click Shares in the left folder tree to view all active shares, including hidden administrative shares.

Accessing the Shared Folder from Another PC

Once shared, other users can access the folder using these methods:

Method 1: File Explorer

  • Open File Explorer → type the network path in the address bar → Enter.
  • Or click Network in the sidebar → double-click the host computer’s name.
  • Enter username and password if required.

Method 2: Run Command

  • Press Windows Key + R → type \\ComputerName\SharedFolderName.
  • Replace ComputerName with the host PC’s name or IP, and SharedFolderName with the folder name.
  • Press Enter → provide username and password if required.

For convenience, you can add the folder as a network location or map it as a network drive.

Important Notes

  • Security: Keep sharing Off on Public networks.
  • Public Folder: Files in C:\Users\Public are visible if Public folder sharing is enabled.
  • Connectivity: Disabling sharing does not disconnect you from the internet; it only hides your PC from local devices.

By following these steps, you can share folders securely across your Windows devices. Always apply sharing only on trusted networks to protect your files and maintain privacy.
