How To Enable / Disable Network Sharing in Windows

Network sharing in Windows allows you to make your computer visible to others and share files or folders securely. This guide explains how to enable or disable network discovery, configure sharing settings, and access shared folders step by step.

Enable or Disable Network Discovery

Before sharing files, your computer must be set to recognize other devices on the network.

Set Network Profile to Private

• Windows disables sharing on Public networks for security. Ensure your home or office network is set to Private.
• Open Settings (Windows Key + I).
• Go to Network & internet.
• Windows 11: Click on Ethernet or Wi-Fi depending on your connection.
• Windows 10: Click on Status in the left sidebar, then Properties under your active connection.
• Under Network profile type, select Private.

Turn On or Off Network Discovery and File Sharing

• In Settings, go to Network & internet.
• Windows 11: Click Advanced network settings → Advanced sharing settings.
• Windows 10: Click Status → Network and Sharing Center → Change advanced sharing settings.
• Under Private networks:
  • Toggle Network discovery On or Off.
  • Toggle File and printer sharing On or Off.
• Under Public networks, keep these Off for security.
• Under All networks:
  • Password protected sharing: On requires user accounts and passwords; Off is easier but less secure.
  • Public folder sharing: On makes anything in C:\Users\Public visible to others.

Sharing a Specific Folder

• Right-click the folder → Properties → Sharing tab → Share.
• Choose users:
  • Select Everyone to allow all users, or specify a particular user.
  • Adjust Permission Level (Read or Read/Write).
• Click Share → Done.

Quick Verification

• Press Windows Key + R → type fsmgmt.msc → Enter.
• Click on Shares in the left folder tree to view all active shares, including hidden administrative shares.

Accessing Shared Folder from Another PC

• Open File Explorer on the other computer.
• Type the network path in the address bar → Enter.
• Or press Windows Key + R → type: \\ComputerName\SharedFolderName
  (Replace ComputerName with the host PC’s name or IP, and SharedFolderName with the folder name.)
• If password-protected sharing is enabled, enter the username and password for the account.

Important Notes

• Private networks (home Wi-Fi) are safe for sharing.
• Public networks (cafes, airports) should have sharing disabled.
• Disabling sharing does not disconnect you from the internet; it only hides your PC.
• Keep sharing enabled on trusted networks if you rely on shared printers or file servers.
