Although Microsoft officially discontinued the native Windows To Go feature, you can still create a fully functional portable version of Windows 10 or 11 using Rufus. This guide explains the process step by step for a smooth setup.
Be aware that this method requires a fast external drive for reliable performance, ideally a USB 3.0/3.2 flash drive or portable SSD.
Important Note
Do not use cheap or generic USB drives. Standard thumb drives have poor random write speeds, which will cause Windows to freeze and become unusable. Use a certified Windows To Go drive or a portable SSD for best results.
Prerequisites
- Target Drive: USB drive or external HDD/SSD with at least 32GB capacity (all data will be wiped).
- Rufus: Latest version of the tool.
- Windows ISO: Windows 10 or Windows 11 ISO file.
Connect Your Drive and Open Rufus
Plug your external drive into a fast USB port (USB 3.0 or Type-C). Launch Rufus and ensure your external drive is selected under the Device dropdown.
Select or Download Your Windows ISO
Click SELECT to locate a Windows ISO file. If you don’t have one, click the arrow next to SELECT, switch to DOWNLOAD, and let Rufus fetch an official ISO directly from Microsoft.

Customize Your Windows Installation
Click START. A customization window will appear. Options include creating a local offline account (to avoid signing into a Microsoft account) and other preferences. Configure as needed, then click OK.
Confirm Data Wipe and Flash
Rufus will warn you that all data on the target drive will be erased. Double-check the selected drive, then click OK. The flashing process begins and may take 10 minutes on a fast SSD or up to an hour on slower drives.
How to Boot Into Your Portable Windows Drive
Once Rufus shows READY, your portable drive is complete. To boot:
- Shut down the target computer.
- Insert your portable drive.
- Power on and press the Boot Menu key (F12, F11, F9, F8, or Esc).
- Select your external USB drive.
The first boot will take a few minutes as Windows sets up devices and installs drivers. Afterward, you’ll have a portable workspace that saves files and apps directly to the drive, usable across multiple computers.
