How To Check & Repair System Files in Windows

Corrupted or missing system files can cause instability and performance issues in Windows. Fortunately, Microsoft provides built-in tools to help you check and repair these files quickly and effectively.

Step 1: Run DISM

Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the Windows image, which is essential for System File Checker (SFC) to function properly.

  1. Press Windows Key + S, type cmd, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Type one of the following commands and press Enter:
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth – scans the system image for issues (optional).
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth – repairs the image if problems are detected.

This process may take time, and an active internet connection is required to download replacement files if needed.

Step 2: Run SFC

System File Checker (SFC) scans and repairs corrupted or missing system files.

  1. In the same Command Prompt window, type:
    sfc /scannow
  2. Press Enter and wait for the scan to complete. SFC will automatically repair any issues it finds.

Interpreting Results

  • If no issues are found: “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
  • If issues are repaired: “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”
  • If some issues cannot be fixed: Run the commands again or consider performing a system restore.

By using DISM and SFC together, you can ensure your Windows system files remain healthy and stable. Regular checks help prevent unexpected errors and keep your computer running smoothly.
