How To Enable / Disable Vertical Tabs in Google Chrome

Google Chrome introduced vertical tabs starting with version 146 (March 2026). This feature allows you to manage tabs more efficiently by displaying them in a sidebar. In this guide, you’ll learn how to enable or disable vertical tabs step by step.

Update Chrome

  • Ensure you are running Google Chrome version 146 or later.
  • Go to Menu > Help > About Google Chrome to check and update.

Enable Vertical Tabs

  • Right‑click on any tab and select Show tabs vertically.
  • Tabs will move from the top bar to a sidebar on the left.
  • You can collapse and expand tabs as needed.
  • Alternatively, go to Settings > Appearance and select the tab position.

If the Option Is Not Visible

  • Type chrome://flags in the address bar.
  • Search for Vertical Tabs.
  • Set it to Enabled and restart Chrome.

Disable Vertical Tabs

  • Right‑click on the tab sidebar and select Show tabs horizontally.
  • Or go to Settings > Appearance and change the tab position.
  • If enabled via Chrome flags, set the flag back to Disabled and restart Chrome.

Vertical tabs in Chrome provide a flexible way to organize your browsing experience. Whether you prefer the traditional horizontal layout or the modern vertical sidebar, switching between them is quick and simple.
